I don’t think he’s fully decided, but the special election is very soon: April 8, with a runoff on June 3, which is the regular California primary election day, if no candidate gets more than 50% of the vote. Time to join the the newly minted Draft Lessig Facebook group created by my colleague John Palfrey …

The
Future of the Internet--And How to Stop It

Having Lawrence Lessig in the Congress will aid tremendously the education of sitting representatives in the subtlies of technologies and how legislation will effect this whole area.
If they can elect the Governator why can’t California elect a decent and intelligent non-hollywood type too?
At his Free Culture farewell lecture a few weeks ago, Lessig floated ‘Change Congress’ as the name of his new anti-corruption initiative. Which is not to say that it couldn’t be put to some other use…
With possibilities such as this and the current roll of the Obama campaign, there is so much hope everywhere that technologists and non-techies alike are looking for a sea-change in our internal valuation system. A soft-revolution is necessary to save this country -and this world- from its currently doomed consume-and-replace mentality.
If we continue the pace of our current “might-is-right” lobbying system, we cannot expect anything other than a crash of this grand house-of-cards (our economy) that’s holding up the military-industrial juggernaut as well as our wasteful habits.
Change is inevitable. With options such as Lessig (and the potential of Barak Obama) on the horizon, there is no reason why this world can’t change for the better by guided choice – instead of having natural selection choose a better option for this planet. The currently destructive human (and largely inhumane) environment we are responsible for can only continue for so long. Sooner or later, the sins of the fathers will catch up with their daughters – and that is not a pleasant thought to contemplate.
