It opens today, 20 November, and its goal is to bring “digitised books, films, paintings, newspapers, sounds and archives from Europe’s greatest collections.” At this moment, according to the International Herald Tribune, it has “3 million items now and officials hope to get 10 million items on it by 2010. Even that is just a start, as only one percent of the historic works, documents and cultural artifacts across Europe have so far been digitized.” But even more interesting is the fact that half of its content is from France, German counting for 1% and Britain 10%. Food for thought.

Science-fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke, died today at 90 years old. He was the author of one of the best science-fiction novels ever, 2001: Space Odyssey. One of the great pioneers of this genre.
